Discover the best in new contemporary fiction. This month we will discuss Exit West by Mohsin Hamid.

A love story that unfolds in a world being transformed by migration. In a country on the brink of civil war, two young people meet: sensual, independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, thrust into premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors--doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As violence and the threat of violence escalate, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through.

I thought this book would be cheesy because it's told from the perspective of a dog, but it was actually very sweet and insightful. The dog, Enzo, describes the lives of the family he lives with, as well as how it feels to be trapped in a dog's body and unable to communicate with people. There are plenty of racing metaphors since Denny, Enzo's owner, is a race-car driver. There's also a lot of sadness and heartbreak, but it's well worth the read.

non-fiction. This book follows the onset of the AIDS epidemic through the indifference and the hate. It follows the lack of researchers for drugs. It follows the ignorance of pompous hate-mongers. It follows how possible drugs sat waiting for years to even be tested for efficacy all the while they died and died and died. We lost less soldiers in the Vietnam war than to AIDS in the USA. History will not look kindly on the care we could have given....but we did not. It is all so sad. It just made me cry. We need to be reminded lest we forget.

Well I just finished Book 2, more drama, excitement and suspense than Book 1, if that's at all possible. Kept me on the edge of my reading chair all the way thru. I definitely recommend this trilogy to everyone. However, I will take a little break before taking on Book 3. ENJOY !!!!

Very simply a treatise on how to improve the world and find value and happiness in one's life from someone who has gone from the height of Hollywood popularity to discovering in himself what is most important. If even a small percentage of the populace took this book to heart the world would be a better place.
